Our highway shield and rail icons have been custom drawn by our cartography team to represent the highway and transit signage you would see around the world. Use the Mapbox Map Icon Editor to customize the icon colors of this set to fit the style of your map.
How to use your icons
Once you’ve customized and downloaded your icons from the editor, upload or drag and drop them into Mapbox Studio. Our Streets tileset uses different data fields in the road_label data source layer which you can use to reference the appropriate icon. These data fields are {network} for rail icons, {shield}-{reflen} for highway shields, and motorway-exit-{reflen} for motorway exits. Using one of these values for an icon-image property on a layer with the proper source will use the appropriate icon from your style. The reflen value reflects the width of the icon to allow for different amounts of text to appear over it. These values are already referenced in many of our core styles.
